The first thing you need when arriving in France would be accommodation. The best thing to do would be to pre book accommodation before arriving, however, this is not so easy to do during peak season, as most places are either full or don’t reserve beds for more than a few nights.
To start off with, I would recommend staying at a crew house. The crew houses can be quite pricy, however they will be able to bring you up to date with the yachting industry, teach you stuff you never knew, and you will meet a whole bunch of other yachties. In this industry, it’s not what you know... rather who you know! Networking is a huge factor in this industry and the sooner you start networking, the sooner you will get into the game. Most crew houses will also be able to help you out with anything you need to know and will supply you with basic facilities such as internet, wifi, printing and daily job notices. I had several friends who were eating breakfast in the crew agencies, when a captain walked in and picked the first person he saw!
Once you have spent a few weeks in the crew houses though, and have gotten used to how everything works, moving into an apartment with friends is a good idea! The apartments are a lot cheaper and there is a lot more freedom and space normally. Below you will find a list and description of all the crew houses that I know of in Antibes. If you know of any other crew houses/accommodation, please send the details to yachting4newbies@gmail.com.
The Crew House: Probably the most popular crew house in Antibes. The crew houses houses about 30 people, at either 25 euros a night, or 125 euros a week. This is one of the cheaper crew houses. The crew houses offers internet, printing (of CV’s and business cards), a full kitchen and free wifi and laundry. Every Friday night they have a barbeque for 10 euros, which includes punch and food. The Crew House is a great place for networking and meeting new people and is very central and close to the docks. The owners are both very nice, however Martin is very strict, and if you give him any crap you will be kicked straight out! A notice board also shows the most recent job offerings as Martin receives them. Their contact details are as follows:

Amma’s: So far the cheapest crew house I could find, at 20 euros a night, or 120 a week. There is a reason why it is so cheap though! Amma’s is located on the other side of the railway tracks, quite a distance away from the harbour. It can sleep about 18 people, and has no laundry facilities, and bare minimum cooking facilities (One microwave to be exact!) The good thing though is that there is almost always space available, so if you arrive and find you can’t get accommodation anywhere, fear not, because you’re almost guaranteed to get accommodation here. If however, you are stuck at Amma’s with a bunch of awesome people, it came become quite homely. For the extra 5 euros though, I would rather stay at The Crew House.

The Crew Grapevine: The crew grapevine is one of the more upper class crew houses. It is located just behind the Hop Store, making it very central to the night life and right next to the harbour and international key. Free printing and internet is provided, with free kitchen and laundry facilities. The bedding is also really nice and spacious and there is a lounge for you to hang out in. All this comfort comes at a cost though of 35 euros a night, or 210 a week, with a minimum of 3 days stay. However, if you have the money, it is definitely worth paying in that bit extra for the Crew Grapevine. As with the Crew House, regular job postings are put up on a notice board, and the owner is too happy to help you with anything to do with yachting.

The Glamorgan: I have never stayed at the Glamorgan, but I have had friends who have stayed there and they reckon it’s quite a nice place. They have a dining room, fully equipped kitchen, Sky TV, two computers, wifi and free printing. Free laundry facilities are also included. The charge is 30 euros a night with a minimum of 3 night stay. Otherwise 200 euros a week.
